Anyone who has ever known a person with cancer has experienced the far-reaching effects of the disease. It challenges everyone involved in his or her life.
Individuals with cancer, family members and friends of all ages need an environment in which they feel comfortable asking questions, sharing experiences and seeking support. On April 19, 2002, Gilda’s Club North Texas opened its big red doors at One Works of Grace Plaza in a Texas-sized Grand Opening Celebration. From the day of our Grand Opening Celebration, we had a membership of 165 people with cancer and their loved ones. Our clubhouse is the first Texas affiliate of the national program created in 1991, in memory of comedian, Gilda Radner.
The mission of Gilda’s Club North Texas is to create a free meeting place where people with cancer and their families and friends come together for emotional and social support. This clubhouse is for men, women and children and addresses every cancer diagnosis.
Gilda's Club provides the social and emotional needs of its members solely through the financial support of friends, corporations, foundations and other organizations, and through personal donations in honor or memory of a family member or friend.
We are seeking the support of North Texas area visionaries who want to be a part of this distinctive program. Gilda's Club North Texas achieved its initial goal of having a program and a seedling community formed from the day our doors opened.
Now, we look ahead with visionary board members, extraordinary corporate partners, committed individual donors and volunteers to establish a meaningful presence in the lives of all North Texas citizens touched by the cancer experience.
We sincerely thank all contributors who have generously stepped foward to help open the Gilda's Club doors in North Texas and continue to support us. We have seen our contributors give from the heart. We have heard amazing stories of the power to love and to live fully, whatever the outcome of a cancer diagnosis. We invite you to visit Gilda's Club and see what has been created, from vision, giving, and hearts of compassion.
Gilda's Club North Texas launched a capital campaign in 2000 to raise $4.5 million to purchase and renovate a 13,500 square-foot site. The site is centrally located in Dallas at 2710 Oak Lawn Avenue and accessible by public transportation.
The Clubhouse includes six support group rooms for members, their families and friends; a living room for reading and conversation; art workshop space; a community room for social activities, meetings and lectures; an exercise room; a playroom for kids; a hang-out for teens; a quiet place for refuge; a library with books and computers; kitchen facilities and office space for staff and volunteers.
We are seeking capital campaign funding, to support the building structure and operating costs, as well as the program. We also gratefully acknowledge gifts-in-kind for goods and services provided to keep the Clubhouse operating.
